Abstract

This article reflects on the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil, focusing on social inequalities and the challenges faced by peripheral and favela populations. Using data collected by the Rede Penssan and analyzing the social and economic context in Brazil, the study highlights that, by July 2022, Brazil had recorded 671,938 Covid-19 deaths, while public policies such as the Auxílio Brasil proved insufficient to support millions of vulnerable families. The article also explores the alarming situation of food insecurity in the country, with 125.2 million people living in food insecurity, and highlights the persistent racial inequality, with 60% of the Black population affected by hunger. Throughout the text, a parallel is drawn with the accounts of Carolina de Jesus, who denounced the precarious conditions and hunger in the favelas over 60 years ago, showing that, despite the passage of time, many structural issues remain. The solidarity and resistance of favela communities, who mobilized to mitigate the damage caused by the pandemic, emerge as examples of strength, organization, and resilience in the face of the state's abandonment. In its final considerations, the article reaffirms the commitment to the struggle for social justice, solidarity, and confronting inequalities, following the legacy of Carolina de Jesus.
